What Is Social Realism?

Social realism is when people act on the conditions that occur in every day life. The films mainly portray the lives of working class citizens and the poor.

Here are some examples of films that involve Social realism:

'This is England' is a film set in 1983 about 'young skinheads' who's subculture is being changed. This relates to Social Realism because the characters are forced to make a choice to stay with their group, become Racist and support this old member that has just come out of prison or they all split up and reject his ways. Racism is a Social Realist subject because it is something that happens everyday around the world.

Kidulthood is a film about the live's of several teenagers who live in London and who behave in a violent manner. They are portrayed as reckless youths who commit crimes such as drug taking and theft. This film has Social Realism in because this sort of thing occurs everyday, mainly in the areas of working class citizens.

Snatch is a film that contains two plots, one being that someone is searching the stolen diamond and the other is a small-time boxer promoter who is also being held by a Ruthless gangsta. This links to Social Realism because stealing and bullying are the main causes that happen in everyday life. Snatch would be a good film to watch if you want to know about social realism.
