'Soft' Short film analysis

In the short film 'Soft' they used a range of angle shot types to show the movement of the actors and to indicate there emotions. At the beginning of the film, it started off with a girl chasing a boy down a long alley way to then be followed by a gang of boys beating up the boy. The shot type they used to help the audience to understand what is going on was a point of view shot. This helps us to feel the characters emotions and to see exactly what they are seeing from where they are standing.

In the next scene, we see a crane shot overhead showing the location of where we are. They are also using an establishing shot to show what the scene is and to help us to understand. After we see this, we see a close up of his dads face as he is about to walk out the door to go to the shop. Once he walks out the house, it portrays both a mid-shot and long shot so the audience can see where he is walking. This is effective because it shows the tension of what’s going to happen next.

Once he gets to the post office for milk, it goes straight to a Point of view shot of one of the attackers. It shows us how he sees the man approaching the shop and what exactly happens next. When using a point of view shot, it shows the emotions of the character because we are behind the eyes of them so it makes us feel like we are in the film.

After the dad comes back out of the shop with his milk, it then goes back to the POV shot of one of the attackers. You see one of the members of the gang kick the dad in the face and then fall to the floor.  Following that, it shows a mid shot of the dad walking back home with the gang of attackers following closely behind him. When the dad is walking home, it has close up shots of his face and then him having flashbacks of the incident that just happend. Later on in the film, when the father is in the kitchen with his son, it shows a close up shot of his sons face from when he was beaten up by the gang.

Following on from this, the father refuses to go outside and tell the gang to move away from his house. Once the dad decides to try go outside to talk to them, the son beats him to it while he stays back in the house trying to hide. Whilst the son, Scott, is trying to tell them to go away, it keeps having close up shots of the dad which indicates that he is scared to go outside and face them. Therefore, this pushes Scott to run back outside from his house with a bat to hit the gang with. When Scott is doing this, is keeps showing clips of the bat and then one of the gang members getting hit. This connotes that the victim is now in pain and that for the first time, they are afraid of the boy rather then it being the other way around. When all of the gang members run off, the short film finishes with a crane shot like how it started.
